Lapeer County Prosecutor Tim Turkelson will not charge Joe Gamrat for sending anonymous text messages to former state Representatives Cindy Gamrat of Allegan County and Todd Courser of Lapeer County threatening to expose their affair. In a statement to “The Detroit News,” Turkelson said the messages “do not rise to the level of criminal extortion,” and added prosecuting anyone in the situation is a waste of taxpayer money. Courser sent out an e-mail claiming he was caught having sex with a male prostitute to try to make the affair seem tame in an attempt to flush out the person sending the texts. Gamrat’s husband was revealed as the source over the weekend.

In the early morning hours of September 11, Courser resigned from office and an hour later, Gamrat was expelled by the state House. Both lost in their attempt to win back their seats in Republican primaries earlier this month.
