Firearm Deer Season Is Underway

Michigan’s 16-day firearms deer season started yesterday, and the state Department of Natural Resources is urging all hunters to wear blaze orange at all times and practice safety while in the woods. Chad Stewart of the DNR expects activity to be about the same as last year, although license sales are down slightly this season.

Stewart says there is localized concern after chronic wasting disease was reported in Ingham County, and deer heads should be checked in Ingham, Eaton and Clinton counties. He also encourages hunters to have deer heads checked for Bovine TB in Northeastern Lower Michigan, where that disease has been a concern in recent years.
