The parents of Calista Springer may get a new trial. 16-year-old Calista Springer died in a fire at her home next to the St. Joseph County Courthouse in 2008 because she was chained to her bed by her parents, who say they did it for her own good. Her parents, Anthony and Marsha Springer, claim she would wander at night and get into trouble, and restraining her was the only way to control her. They claim Child Protective Services were aware they were doing it. When she died, her parents were convicted of abuse and torture and sentenced to long prison terms. In a narrow and focused ruling, The Michigan Supreme Court has ordered The St. Joseph Circuit Court to reexamine whether or not Anthony and Marsha Springer received competent representation from their attorney. It was a case that got national attention. A hearing will be set on the issue and in the meantime the Springers will remain in prison.
