Governor Rick Snyder has signed legislation that renames part of US 12 in Berrien County after a fallen Michigan State Police trooper. State Trooper Steven B. Devries was killed in the line of duty when he was shot by a bank robber along the side of US 12 on October 12th, 1972 near Niles. State Representative Dave Pagel introduced legislation to rename US 12 between M-60 and US 31 as the Trooper Steven BB. DeVries Memorial Highway earlier this year.

DeVries’ wife and two sons, along with their families, attended the signing ceremony in Lansing on October eighth. A sign will now be placed along the side of the highway, and Pagel says it won’t cost any taxpayer money.
