The area of training include firearms, water safety, defensive tactics, patrol techniques, ethics, and first aid, among other things. When academy is over, the recruits who graduate will be sent out to train in the field for another 17 weeks. Haynes says that they will have a say regarding which posts they’re ultimately assigned to, as the department wants to accommodate new troopers the best it can. The recruits come from varied backgrounds. Some are already law enforcement officers, some have a military background, and some are out of college having studied criminal justice.
