The Michigan Senate Health Policy Committee on Tuesday heard from State Senator John Proos and Doctor Stuart Boekeloo, a dentist from Saint Joseph, about the problem of some nursing homes lacking adequate areas for medical procedures to be performed. Proos says that a bill he introduced would require any nursing home that provides medical or dental services to its residents to have a private examination room for the purpose of medical or dental examination and treatment.

The legislation was inspired by Doctor Boekeloo’s experience of being asked to be the resident dentist of a new assisted living home only to discover he’d be providing care out of the facilitys hair salon. Proos says that elderly Michiganders living in nursing homes deserve to have adequate locations for dental and medical procedures.
