BH Storm Sewer Improvements Expected Next Year

Residents continue to ask city leaders in Benton Harbor to address the ongoing issue of water leaking onto local streets. At Monday’s commission meeting, Emma Kinnard said that she’s worried about the accidents those leaks could cause once the water starts to freeze.

Listen:

Kinnard asked why the city hasn’t been staying on top of cleaning clogged storm drains. City Manager Darwin Watson said that’ll be done this fall, but added the problem will be ongoing until a deeper problem is addressed.

Listen:

Watson said that the city is currently using a state grant to out its storm sewer system, which is old and badly needs upgrades. Once that’s done, he says grants will be sought to start making repairs that cause the leaks out on to streets which residents see all over the community. That could start to happen next year.
