The Berrien County Treasurer’s office is hoping that it can find a developer willing to purchase the former Mercy Hospital building in Benton Harbor. Treasurer Brett Witkowski tells us that his staff took a look at the facility this week to see how badly damaged it is, and the worst damage was to the basement.

Previously, the plan had been to demolish the Mercy Hospital building, but Witkowski says that it would cost 1.5 to two million dollars to do so. Plus, it could still be used, possibly as housing. The treasurer’s office will move to sell the facility once environmental tests come back showing that it’s not contaminated.
