Contractors are hopeful they’ll be able to unveil the refurbished St. Joseph lighthouses in about two months. Project architect Michelle Smay of Mihm Construction says they’re on target to be done by the end of October, and are currently halfway finished with the renovation.

She tells WSJM News the biggest setback in the project has been figuring out how to fix cracks in the basement walls which allowed several feet of sand and water to seep in. About a dozen workers are on site daily, driving forklifts around the lighthouses on makeshift roads just inches from the lake and working on welding, blasting, and repairing the sentinels. Mihm Construction has worked on 13 Michigan lighthouses.
