LMC Program Aims To Help Benton Harbor Students Succeed

A program at Lake Michigan College is aiming to help students who come in from Benton Harbor as a result of the Promise Zone scholarship. LMC’s Doctor Clint Gabbard says that the Start to Finish program was started in 2012, a when college officials realized that many Benton Harbor graduates coming in because of the promise were not doing well.

Star to Finish Director Louis Thomas says that the program pairs those students up with mentors who teach them the fundamentals of succeeding in higher education.

Start to Finish also provides many of the students with transportation, as that’s often one of the biggest obstacles facing them. LMC says that around 200 students have been helped by the program, and they expect another 45 or so next year. It’s been supported with donations from a variety of local organizations. It’s being supported with donations from a wide variety of local organizations, and since its implementation, it’s steadily improved completion rates.
