A scholarship is being created by Grand Valley State University in memory of 2013 graduate Richard Wheeler, the South Haven native killed last week fighting a wildfire in Washington state. The Richard Wheeler First Responder Memorial Scholarship will be available to students who are dependents of those who have fallen as first responders, including firefighters, police and paramedics. The 31-year-old perished with two other U.S. Forest Service firefighters last week in Twisp, Washington. GVSU has not established the amount for the scholarship as yet. The university’s flag will fly at half staff on the main campus in Allendale for 30 days in memory of Wheeler. A memorial in South Haven is still being planned.
