A World War I era cannon that had for decades been in the possession of a VFW post in Benton Township has been stolen. VFW post 1137 Financial Officer Robert Williams says that the post on East Napier Avenue has been closed since October while members try to relocate, but he and others still stop by the building to air it out and do maintenance, and on Wednesday morning, he showed up to find the cannon gone. He’s hoping someone will spot it somewhere before the thieves are able to scrap it.

The cannon sat on a concrete slab outside the building, and there are no signs anyone tried to break in.

Benton Township Police have been contacted about the matter, and are investigating. Anyone with information on the theft should contact the department at 269-925-1135.
