A five way intersection in Saint Joseph will soon be getting some safety improvements, thanks to a collaboration between city staff and the Michigan Department of Transportation. City Engineer Tim Zebell says that they’re aiming to improve traffic flow and pedestrian crossings where Lake Boulevard, Lakeshore Drive, Main Street, Winchester Avenue, and Lakeside Avenue meet. MDOT’s plan is to add some “bump outs,” or expanded curbs, that would give pedestrians more room. Zebell says there could be several benefits to the project.

As part of the project, the bike lane on Lake Boulevard will be expanded, the left turn lane on that same road will be eliminated, and the crosswalks will be shortened. MDOT will likely do the work next summer.
