Benton Harbor Area Schools has a new athletic director. Fred Smith tells WSJM News that he is resigning as the athletic director in Buchanan effective August 7 and will be named the new AD at Benton Harbor tonight.

He says hiring a football coach is his top priority immediately, but there is also the issue of a conference starting next fall when the Tigers leave the Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference.

Smith’s education career began at Benton Harbor in 1979 as a student teacher, and he coached 9th grade football and was the assistant men’s track coach for two years. He says he’s always wanted to return to the district during his career, and says he could not pass up the opportunity to do so. Smith succeeds Willie Wilson as the Benton Harbor athletic director.
