Former Fire Chief Honored With Procession Through Saint Joseph

Nearly 50 public safety vehicles made their way through Saint Joseph Friday afternoon as part of a funeral procession for former Fire Chief Skip Munson, who died on Sunday. The procession went from Stark Funeral Home to the Saint Joe fire station with Munson’s casket on the back of an antique 1937 fire truck. Saint Joseph Deputy Director of Public Safety James Crow worked under Munson when he was chief, and remembers him fondly.

Munson served on the fire departments of the city of Saint Joseph, Saint Joseph Township, Bridgman-Lake Township, and the city of Benton Harbor. He was named firefighter of the year in 1984, and retired from Saint Joseph as fire chief in 1997. He died Sunday at the age of 68 of a heart attack.
