First Van Buren County, and now a black bear has been confirmed to have visited several homes in Berrien County this week. The bear has been to Sodus, Royalton, and Oronoko townships since Monday, and the Department of Natural Resources believes it is the same bear that was already found in Lawrence, South Haven and Hartford. It’s the first time since December 1868 that a black bear has been confirmed in Berrien County. The last one was chased by hunters through swamps in Lake and Weesaw townships according to the “Herald Palladium.” The bear went after bird feeders in Royalton and Oronoko townships. The DNR is urging people to take down bird feeders and pull garbage cans inside the garage to eliminate food sources for the bear.
