State Senate Starts Approving Budget Bills For FY 2015-16

The Michigan Senate has begun the process of approving the state budget. Lawmakers voted 22-16 this morning to pass the General budget, which includes extra money for road repairs. Senator John Proos of St. Joseph says the $400 million in the budget for roads makes more sense than Proposal 1.

Proos says the added funding in the fiscal year 2015-16 budget gives lawmakers time to craft a workable road funding plan.

The $38.7 billion General Fund budget also cuts funding for the state’s film incentive program in half, closes the W.J. Maxey Boys Training School in Whitmore Lake and cuts over 200 Department of Health and Human Services jobs. The House will vote later today. Lawmakers in that chamber will also be the first to approve the Education budget, which will then be sent over to the Senate for a vote.
