Senator Schuitmaker Seeking To Exempt Gun Safety Purchases From Taxes

A southwest Michigan lawmaker is looking to improve gun safety and save money for gun owners. Senator Tonya Schuitmaker told Michigan’s Big Show that the state has a vibrant hunting culture, and her plan will enhance that along with the 2nd Amendment.

The Lawton Republican says the cost to the state in the lost sales taxes will be “very minimal,” and can save lives by keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and by preventing unintentional injuries.

Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Washington all exempt firearms safety devices from sales taxes. Schuitmaker is introducing the two-bill package today.
