Mandatory Meetings For 4-H At Van Buren Youth Fair Over Poultry Ban

Parts of county fairs will look a lot different this year in Michigan as the state Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has canceled all poultry and waterfowl exhibitions to prevent avian flu from getting into the state. Meetings will be held for 4-H kids and their parents who were going to show at the Van Buren Youth Fair to get information out, with the first one being Thursday and the other two set for next Tuesday and Wednesday.

That’s Janice Zerbe of Michigan State University Extension, who says reaction to the cancellation of the birds being exhibited has been mixed.

The cancellation of the exhibitions is meant to protect birds from the avian flu. The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development says this includes, but is not limited to shows, exhibitions, swap meets, petting zoos at fairs, game bird and waterfowl fair displays, and Miracle of Life exhibits.

The Van Buren Youth Fair meetings will each start at 7 p.m. Thursday’s meeting will be at the Conference Center in Lawrence, with next week’s being at the fairgrounds.
