Congressman Fred Upton’s 21st Century Cures initiative is moving forward following a 51-0 vote to pass it out of the Energy and Commerce Committee. Upton worked on the bill with Democrat Diana DeGette of Colorado, and says there is strong bipartisan support.

Listen:

Upton says of the 7,000 diseases that are known, there are only cures for about 500. The 21st Century Cures initiative will speed up the approval of drugs and devices and also allow for more medical trials that have previously only been available in other parts of the world.

Listen:

Upton is hoping to have the package before the full U.S. House next month and on President Obama’s desk by the end of the year.
