Mercy Hospital Foreclosure Could Leave Benton Harbor On The Hook

About 261 thousand dollars in unpaid taxes owed on the former Mercy Hospital building in Benton Harbor may have to be paid back by local units of government if the property doesn’t sell for at least that amount during an August auction. Berrien County Treasurer Brett Witkowski says that the taxes not paid on the Mercy property has previously been doled out by the county to local taxing authorities, and if it’s not made up with the auction, the locals will have to pay it back.

If the Mercy property fails to sell for the necessary amount, then the city of Benton Harbor would have to pay back to the county about 100 thousand dollars. Benton Harbor Schools would also have to pay back about 59 thousand. Others that would owe smaller amounts back to the county are Berrien RESA, the Benton Harbor Library, Dial a Ride, and Lake Michigan College.
